The AFDE Certification program includes written testing, performance testing, a mock trial and oral examination. Continuing education is required for certification renewal every five years. In 2003 the Board of Forensic Document Examiners (BFDE) began offering a certification program designed to meet the requirements of the Forensic Specialties Accreditation Board (FSAB) and was subsequently accredited by FSAB (2006). The AFDE chose not to apply for FSAB accreditation, but rather to offer support to the new independent board. For this reason, the AFDE put its certification offering on hold and began referring individuals to the BFDE program. It is anticipated that the AFDE certification program offering will be withdrawn this year, with all referrals to the BFDE.

The AFDE certification program was an excellent program requiring a demonstration of knowledge and performance, therefore, AFDE will maintain a certification renewal program for those currently holding AFDE certification. This program will continue to require completion of continuing education and other activities to renew certification every five years.
